Wayang Educational Package
“WAYANG FOR THE WORLD”
“Wayang is a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” (UNESCO Declaration, 2003) BACKGROUND The international significance of wayang kulit, the shadow puppet theatre of Indonesia, was testified to by UNESCO when it declared the art form a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.” The organization called for the creation of publications and audio-visual recordings, and this is what Lontar has done with its “Wayang Educational Package”. The Package presents two famous wayang episodes, one with a leadership theme, Rama’s Crown (Makutharama), and one which explores the conflict between different belief systems, The Grand Offering of the Kings (Sesaji Raja Suya) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PACKAGE The Lontar Foundation’s Wayang Educational Package is a landmark work. This package—with its 6 documentary films of 6 wayang performances and its 7 books(2 containing Javanese language transcripts of the 6 performances; 2 containing Indonesian translations of the Javanese texts; 2 with English translations of the Javanese text; and 1 book containing the gamelan notation for the songs that were performed)—is structured in a highly systematic way, so as to promote the greatest potential possible for appreciation, understanding, and analysis of the wayangkulit tradition, particularly current-day performance practices. Nothing has ever been done like it before. With the texts of the 6 lakon having been translated into both English and Indonesian and the films subtitled in those two languages as well, it will now be possible to undertake a thorough study of this unique performance tradition anywhere in the world where Indonesian or English is used as the medium of instruction. Further, with the availability of English and Indonesian translations and subtitles, it will now be relatively easy to translate the materials into other languages. (Plans already include translations into French, Japanese, and German.) |

Sesaji Raja Suya – The Grand Offering of the Kings
A terrifying and evil king, Jarasandha, is terrorizing the world—taking over countries, imprisoning just and popular kings, and ravaging havoc on communities around the world. The heroic Pandhawa family of five brothers craft a plan together with Kresna to put on a very special ceremony of offerings that will help forge peace in the world. Jarasandha, meanwhile, has made his own pact with the evil forces in the underworld, to sacrifice one hundred kings in order to secure his power. He needs three more leaders, as he has already taken control over ninety-seven. As the three leaders Arjuna, Kresna, and Bima face off with Jarasandha in his kingdom of Giribajra, a grand debate begins on the nature of belief, religion, and rituals—Jarasandha insisting he is in the right, and Kresna debating his every point. The story comes to a climax when the Pandhawa actually do go through with their ceremony of offerings, and various challenges to their own peace of mind force them to examine their own beliefs.

Jarasandha, seorang raja jahat dan
menakutkan, sedang meneror dunia—mengambil alih kekuasaan kerajaan-kerajaan
mengorbankan seratus nyawa raja-raja demi mempertahankan kekuatannya. Dia masih membutuhkan tiga raja
sendiri.
